If the 20th Century was the century of growth, the 21st Century will be the century of declines. This will be due to the converging crises of resource depletion (oil, water, topsoil, etc.), economic decline, and climate change. This is in addition to many other sub-crises, now taking place.

Suburban Survival Preparing for Socio-Economic Collapse (Revised and Updated) will show you how to not only survive, but thrive during this period, which is not simply another economic cycle, but the decline stage of our current industrialized civilization. The author addresses many popularly held misconceptions within modern survivalism, as they pertain to food security and the "bugging out" concept, while also placing emphasis on real-world contemporary solutions, such as debt elimination, physical fitness, self-reliance, etc.

The author also stresses that whether-or-not a societal emergency ever occurs within our lifetimes, survivalism, as a way of life, works. The modern preparedness and survivalist movements place emphasis on continual self-improvement, in areas such as nutrition, physical fitness, physical security, etc.

I enjoyed the author's writing style and appreciated his outlook on life. I found it to be a concise compilation of a lot of good prepping ideas and a sound plan. I think it saved me a lot of time prowling the internet for similar ideas. I especially liked the counsel to loose weight, get fit, and learn a practical self-defense technique, Krav Maga. I love Krav Maga! It's what I've been looking for in self-defense training. I highly recommend this book.

Very poorly written and out of date
Great, many good ideas, very well written
Everyone needs to read this book. It's going to happen. All experts agree about that. It's the when that's uncertain.
As a survival author myself (The One Minute Prepper Prepping Your Home and Family to Survive 60 Concise Lessons in the Arts of Survival, Disaster Preparedness, and Food Storage), I read a lot of books on survival and prepping, both for new ideas and to take the pulse of the community. Every once in a while a book comes along that makes me say, "Man, I wish I'd written something like that!" This book is one of them - it's different.

Other reviewers have criticized an earlier edition of "Suburban Survival" for repeating techniques already presented in other sources. Well, of course, folks. Any survival book will have the same characteristic survivalism is a science, and any science builds on the work of those who have gone before. The best authors, like Mr. Snuffy, test and validate the ideas that are passed down to us, and present only the ones that they have found to be practical, useful and effective.

When I first read the book, I found it a little jarring, because it skipped from things like small-unit infantry tactics to political commentary on the current state of society. It took me a while to realize where I'd seen such a mixture before, in Che Guevara's "Guerilla Warfare," which similarly moves back and forth, from descriptions of improvised grenade launchers to the role of the guerilla as the vanguard of popular will.

It is the mark of a great book that it can take such risks with structure, to present a known body of knowledge in a new way, illuminated by a particular world view. Mr. Snuffy is an American patriot, a former Army officer, but he is also a progressive. It's another strength of the book that the foreword is written by James Wesley, Rawles, another former Army officer and dean of the modern survival movement, who comes from the opposite end of the political spectrum. On the one hand the fact that men from both the left and right see America and the world headed for a major die-off is disheartening, but on the other hand the fact that they can come together in the service of the preparedness movement is another reason that this book is a milestone.

Although he is definitely Rawlesian in outlook, Mr. Snuffy doesn't hesitate to state where he differs from the master, particularly on issues of weapons selection, and advanced topics like hunkering down versus bugging out.

The bottom line is that if you're new to prepping, you'll find this to be an excellent, compact handbook filled with practical, tested advice. If you're further along in your prepping journey, you'll find it a fascinating dialogue on important theoretical issues. Five stars.
Like others, I was picked this book up because of the mention by Rawles. I didn't realize I was going to be reading many multi-page passages which were lifted directly from Survivalblog. This book (what the writer doesn't copy/paste from Rawles) reads like an extended blog post, with not much organization, not much original information, but plenty of editorializing. The author is VERY proud that he took a trip to Libya in 2011 to "experience a war in the tradition of Earnest (sic) Hemingway". This author is no Hemingway, he is no Rawles. When he reveals that his previous publisher terminated his contract for this book and he was forced to self publish, I fully understand their decision after finishing it. This books is worthless.
I guess I knew a lot of this stuff already, so it was not as informative as I thought it would be. This will be good for someone new to survivalism, or "prepping" as they call it now. Lots of good basic information. The author does go off on a rant occasionally, but I can forgive that, so do I.
Not what you might expect. This actually has a lot of good or reminder information for just normal everyday things along with some WTSHTF stuff. Mostly heavy on "normal/common sense" prepardness. Makes a super review. Worth every penny you might pay for it. I will not be selling mine back on . This one is a keeper.
